Bhagavad Gita – Introduction

The following articles, will discuss the Bhagavad Gita. The Bhagavad Gita, is a very important book, although a part of a bigger epic, called the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita is considered an individual book. Some even say it is “the Holy Bible” of the Hindus. Most of Hindus regarding it as a high knowledge book. Its importance is (sometimes) considered superior to the Ganga, and if you study the Gita alone, it stand for study of the whole Vedas.

The Gita amalgamates the teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna, his best friend, on the battlefield (Kurukshetra). The book is composed of eighteen chapters and in each chapter the subject is different, but as a whole book it is considered as a way of life, how one can lead a good life, what are the criteria for a healthy and truthful life.

In Yoga, and Yogic practices, the Bhagavad Gita is given a very high importance. Krishna teaches Arjuna who is the real Yogi, what the character of a Yogi should be, what are his actions and how does he dwell in this world, what life is all about, and how does it reflect through the Yogic eyes.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna gives anyone of us the teachings of liberation, not only that, but how to liberate others as well. What are the right and wrong ways. What shall be done in order to get to Moksha.

The name Bhagavad Gita itself means a lot! Bhagavad means God (or Godly) from the root Bhagavan, and Gita means song, hence the literally translated name of the Bhagavad Gita is the song of God. Lord Krishna sings his instructions to his friend and disciple Arjuna.

Why is the Lord singing? Why isn’t the Lord just teaching?
That is a very nice anecdote I found. When you sing, it is easier to remember the teachings instead of just teaching, and saying what you want the disciple to get. Therefore, Lord Krishna sings the Gita, so each and one of us can relate to it, remember the teachings and of course follow them.
